Shane Hanchey, Shane Hanchey, World Champion Tie-Down Roper, has competed professionally since 2009. The talented 26 year-old cowboy has some good advice for those considering making rodeo a career. We asked him about his rookie year and any advice he had for those just starting out, “I was so green. I didn’t know what I was getting into in the beginning. My advice to those starting out, especially kids, is to stay in school. There is plenty of time to rodeo. Also, once you obtain your degree the amateur rodeos will groom you into becoming a better competitor.”

Hanchey is currently single and lives in Sulphur, Louisiana. His hobbies include playing golf, going to LSU games and training horses with his brother, Jason.

If you follow Hanchey on any of his social media websites you will quickly learn that he is a sports fanatic. When he has downtime on the road one of his favorite things to do is play golf. We asked him what his favorite part about traveling was he said, “I love to golf, so getting to travel and see all the different styles of courses and the architecture is really fun for me.”
“Adversity causes some men to break and others to break records.”

Shane Hanchey Q&A

Q: What are you most looking forward to in regards to the structure of an ERA event vs. a traditional rodeo?
A: That we will be treated more professionally in regards to our craft much like a football player would.
Q: Who was your mentor or role model at the start of your career?
A: My brother, most definitely.
Q: Before you back into the box…what is on your mind?
A: I just focus on the calf I have drawn and focus on the start I need to have. After that it becomes muscle memory.
Q: What does your family mean to your success?
A: Everything. My family lives through me since my brother couldn’t rodeo. It means so much to me to see them smile, but it also is difficult when I am not winning. I hate feeling like I let them down.
