He studied at Wharton Junior College and then transferred to Sam Houston University where he graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Business and was a vital athlete on the rodeo team. He bought his permit in 2013 where he won $29,453 on his permit and then on to win Rookie of the Year. He holds the record for winning the most money on a PRCA permit.

In 2014 he accidentally broke his leg practicing on a Steer Wrestling dummy, which ended his 2014 rodeo season. It was a long recovery for Smidt and doctors were unsure if he would ever rope again. Smidt worked hard to overcome the accident and won the 2015 Tie-Down World Champion Title.
